Adult Basic Education (ABE)

If you decide to tutor in this program, you'll be working with native English speakers who have never learned to read well. Our students read below an eighth grade level and have practical goals like getting a job, earning a driver's license, or helping their children with homework. A long-term goal might be to earn a high school equivalency degree by taking the General Educational Development Test (GED).

Adult Basic Education (ABE) tutoring is one-to-one.

You don't need to commit to tutor only native English speaking students; many of our training sessions prepare you to also tutor non-native English speakers.

Do we need to convince you of the benefits of tutoring? Watch this video in which Andy Selsam, an ABE tutor since 2007, describes his expectations and experience tutoring with LVR. "An invested, motivated learner will go far in a short time," he says. Click the triangle Click the triangle image on the video to play it near the lower-left corner to play the video.
